Four or five candidates may stand for election as President of the Fédération Internationale des Échecs (FIDE), which will be celebrated at the Plenary Assembly of FIDE in 2018, President of the Russian Chess Federation, Andrey Vasilievich Filatov, told R-Sport.
The election will be held concurrently to the 43rd Chess Olympiad in Batumi, Georgia in September-October 2018. Kirsan Nikolayevich Ilyumzhinov is the President of FIDE uninterruptedly since 1995, and he has already announced his decision to re-run the presidential polls. In October 2017 FIDE Executive Board delegated executive powers to FIDE Deputy President Georgios Makropulos. Earlier, FIDE Executive Board opposed Ilyumzhinov’s nomination for a new presidential term. “I guess that four or five candidates are expected to run for FIDE Presidency”, Filatov said in a phone conversation. ”Including Georgios Makropulos who is a worthy candidate and a respected person”. He wanted to emphasize that he did not think to candidate himself for the presidential election. “Well, I’ll just say that... this is not my cycle”, President of the Russian Chess Federation said. “I wouldn’t be fair if I should now speak about who the Russian Federation will actually support”, Filatov continued. “It will be up to the new President of the Russian Chess Federation to discuss it with his colleagues. I will re-run (for President of the Russian Chess Federation) next February, and if the chess community will renew its support, then I’ll be able to give you an answer. It will be known only on February whether or not I will be re-elected. As for FIDE Presidency, in any event, we will support the best most electable candidate”. |
